Why Christa Pike's Attorneys Saw September 30 Coming

Christa Pike's legal team spent 2026 telling courts that Tennessee's lethal injection protocol was going to fail on her specifically. The January lawsuit laid out thrombocytosis and small veins. A multi-day hearing before a special master wrapped on August 13. A clemency petition went to Governor Bill Lee on September 3. Lee declined to intervene.
On September 30, Pike took two doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution and survived. Her attorneys say the lines failed and the drug pooled in the tissue of both arms. Attorney Randy Spivey has called what happened foreseeable and foreseen.
Six days later Pike regained consciousness and was speaking, and on October 7 her lawyers stood in front of Judge I'Ashea Myles asking her to order Tennessee to preserve the needles, the syringes, the IV lines, the drug lot numbers, the execution logs, the emails and the encrypted messages from that night. Their stated reason was simple: they have no idea what records exist, and without a court order the state controls all of it. Myles granted the motion and said the order would be sweeping.
Eric Faddis, defense attorney and former prosecutor, joins Tony Brueski on what Pike's lawyers do with that evidence, and what it would take to keep Tennessee from scheduling her again.
