The US Chargé d'Affaires in South Sudan, Michael McCarthy joined Sebit William live on the Miraya Breakfast show this morning for a frank and honest discussion about the multitude of challenges affecting the nation. They explored the ongoing conflict and the prospect of peace, economic challenges as well as the likelihood of the UN Security council imposing sanctions.

The US has recently contributed a further $5Million USD to assist in developing a “credible, impartial and effective” justice mechanism, such as an international hybrid court, that could be used to investigate and penalize those found to be furthering the conflict and committing human rights atrocities.

McCarthy told Sebit William it is important the type and make-up of the justice system needs to be decided by the South Sudanese people.

"I don't think any system of accountability that's contrived New York of imposed by outsiders will have the kind of impact as something the people of South Sudan indicate is what they want," he says.

He says there are several examples from Africa, such as Rwanda and South Africa that have shown "there's good reason to believe in the effectiveness of a homemade justice mechanism."
