US Government pledges support for South Sudan if peace deal is signed on 17 August.

The US Government has pledged its commitment to support South Sudan, if a peace deal is signed on 17 August.

The pledge was announced by the US Ambassador to South Sudan, Catherine Molly Phee.

Speaking exclusively to Radio Miraya in Juba, the Ambassador noted that the US is concerned that the debate over the compromise peace deal has not been constructive and positive.

“It is easy to say no, it is easy to say I don’t want this, but what more important is to say; how do we fix it so it works so that we don’t run into any unintended consequences,” Ambassador Molly said.

Ambassador Molly urged all sides to take advantage of this compromise peace deal, and propose fixes so that it works.

“The agreement is merely a device to allow the warring sides to put their guns down and sit together to make governance decisions,” she noted. The ambassador said it is important for the warring sides to sign a peace deal to end the suffering and killings in South Sudan.
