Severe hunger due to famine could increase risks during pregnancy and childbirthIn a country that struggles with one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates,” says UNFPA Country Representative Esperance Fundira.
In an exclusive interview with Miraya Breakfast show, Dr James Wanyama, UNFPA Humanitarian coordinator confirmed that famine increases the risks of premature or low-birth-weight babies and severe postpartum bleeding.
Dr Wanyama warned that the process of giving life for a hungry woman becomes even more likely to result in death.
In this interview with Samuel Pawon, Dr Wanyama begins by explaining the link between maternal health and famine.
UNFPA also expressed concern that the famine could worsen already existing conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence.
