The Director General Rural water supply and sanitation in the Ministry of water resources and irrigation, Peter Mahal has cautioned the public against communal hand washing from a bowl of water.
Considering the global hand washing campaign, Mahal said communal hand washing where the same water is used by more than one person, is not hygienic and could increase the exchange of germs from one person to another.
He advised the public to strive to wash their hands with soap and under flowing water.
“It is very bad practice, the important thing is that we must wash your hands with running water, that is the key because you are actually cleaning properly and there are techniques of washing your hands. So, if you are doing that way by putting water in the basin and you try to wash your hands, all of you, you have not done anything, instead you are distributing more burdens to others.”
The theme for this year’s Hand washing campaign is Clean hands for good health.
Victor Kinyanjui, UNICEF chief water and sanitation officer stressed the need to embrace hand washing with soap and water.
