UNMISS public opinion survey reveals widespread hope for lasting peace among South Sudanese

Results of a perception survey contracted by the UN Mission in South Sudan indicate an improved sense of security and optimism for peace among the local population. 

The face-to-face interviews conducted between December and January with approximately 2,300 people covered the security situation, the prospects for peace, and how UNMISS is performing.

70% of respondents report feeling either very or somewhat safe, while 28% felt they were not safe.

The results also indicate that a whopping 89% of the population is hopeful for peace since the signing of the peace agreement.

On UNMISS performance, 72% said they felt safer because of UNMISS, while 67% said UNMISS was doing a better job now than we were a year ago.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, David Shearer, released the results at a media conference in Juba.
