Human Rights Watch has released a new report calling on South Sudan lawmakers to prioritize revising the National Security Act (2015) to prohibit the National Security Service from carrying out arrests and detaining people and ensure adequate and broad-based discussions on the reforms. The Human Rights Watchdog says the powers of the Security agency should be limited to intelligence gathering, as envisioned by the Transitional Constitution. The report further urges the National Assembly to urgently enact reforms of the National Security Service to end arbitrary detention and abuse of detainees, before the new government is formed.
