The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is intensifying surveillance and control measures in preparation for a new swarm of desert locusts in the country.
FAO’s regional office this week warned of a fresh wave of the pests in the Horn of Africa region, after Cyclone Gati made landfall in Somalia on Sunday.
The heavy downpour is further expected to allow widespread breeding of the swarms mainly in southern Somalia and Ethiopia, reaching northern Kenya, early next month.
FAO’s Plant Protection Officer, Felix Morris Juma, says their control operations team is on the alert in frontline areas of Eastern Equatoria state.
Mr. Juma spoke to Radio Miraya in this 4" interview.
