UNMAS: There are 353 known mine areas in South Sudan to be cleared of unexploded ordnances

Mine clearance teams have earmarked more than 300 areas for clearance as South Sudan moves to meet a July 2026 deadline for the total elimination of all anti-personnel mine fields. 

The contaminated areas have been identified in different parts of the country. 

The Senior Program Manager of the UN Mine Action Service, Richard Boutler, says great progress in clearance has been made but much is left to be done within the next five years. 

The Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention or the Ottawa Treaty, last week unanimously granted a request from the Government for a five-year extension, until 9 July 2026, in order to complete the clearance of all anti-personnel mine fields areas in the country.
