Press Conference: UN Human Rights Experts release report detailing widespread conflict-related sexual violence

The United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has launched a report detailing what it refers to as ‘widespread sexual violence against women and girls in conflict.’
The 45-page report states that prevalent rape is being perpetrated by all armed groups across the country, often as part of military tactics for which government and military leaders are responsible.
Speaking at a media briefing in Juba this morning, the commission chairperson, Yasmin Sooka said the commission appreciates the trial of foot solders for sexual violence in Yei and Bentiu and said the commission would like to see commanders of armed groups persecuted for conflicted related sexual violence.
The commission also recommends the establishment of more specialized courts to try perpetrators of gender-based violence across the country.
