The Round Table - Election Readiness

On 30th August 2022 the Parties to RARCSS extended the Agreement and the RTGoNU for 2 years beginning from 23 February 2023. The parties cited challenges in the implementation and argue that the ambitious Roadmap with new timelines will enable them to prepare adequately and end the transitional period in elections.

The end of the Transitional period will usher in a government with full mandate from the people of South Sudan through elections in 2024, the RARCSS requires conduct of national election. However, the elections, are preceded by reforms in electoral infrastructure which in turn need guiding legislation.

The National Constitutional Amendment Committee reviewed elections Bill last year and may be ready to be tabled in the Parliament any time soon. The Constitution Making Process Act, 2022 was passed by the Assembly last year and subsequently signed into law by the president on 21 December 2021. The status of political parties Act which is as well critical for the organisations of political parties in preparation for election is uncertain.
