The Duggars Aren't the Story. IBLP Is

Two Duggar brothers now face criminal charges involving children. A third is in federal prison. Understanding how one family keeps producing these outcomes requires understanding the organization that shaped them.

In Part 1 of this three-part interview series, Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke sit down with psychotherapist Shavaun Scott to examine the Institute in Basic Life Principles from the inside out. Scott brings something rare to this conversation: thirty years of clinical experience working with trauma survivors and perpetrators of violence — combined with her own documented personal history inside fundamentalist Christianity, explored in her memoir Nightbird.

IBLP's own published doctrine gave fathers absolute authority over every member of the household. Their materials described leaving paternal authority as witchcraft, framed fear of dying in childbirth as satanic resistance, and characterized rock music as more addictive than crack cocaine. Their homeschool curriculum deliberately excluded any form of education about personal boundaries or abuse — leaving generations of children without the language to identify, name, or report what was happening to them.

This conversation examines how a system like that gets constructed, how it sustains control over decades, and what it produces in the people who spend their lives inside it. The Duggars aren't the story. They're the symptom. This is the disease.
