Nick Reiner Says $558K Was Owed WHEN?!

Two dates now matter in the Nick Reiner case: September 15, 2026, when prosecutors removed the death penalty, and September 14, 2023, when Reiner says roughly $558,000 from his personal trust should already have become his. Those dates put the murder case and the probate case on a collision course. 

District Attorney Nathan Hochman says his office reviewed aggravating and mitigating factors and spoke with Nick's siblings before deciding not to seek capital punishment. California has not carried out an execution since 2006 and remains under a gubernatorial moratorium, but a death sentence was still legally available in a special-circumstance murder case until prosecutors took it off the table. Nick now faces life without parole if convicted as charged. 

The probate fight asks a different question: can Reiner use money his parents placed in a trust for him before they died? His lawyers say the 1993 trust required half to be paid at age 30 and the rest at 35. He turned 30 in 2023 and says he never received the first mandatory distribution. They argue the slayer statute should not block money that was already due before the alleged crimes. The trustee side has challenged releasing funds while the criminal case remains pending. 

Reiner's former private lawyer, Alan Jackson, has said he could return if the defense is funded. Reiner currently has public defenders and has pleaded not guilty. Mental-health evidence may become important, but an insanity plea has not been publicly established. The next probate hearing is October 23.
