Nick Reiner's $1.6M Trust Is Blocked Over WHAT?!

Nick Reiner says a trust created for him in childhood should have paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars before his parents were ever killed. Now that money is tied up in probate court while he faces two murder charges in their deaths, and the fight could shape who represents him at trial. 

Rob and Michele Reiner created Nick's individual trust in 1993. His attorneys say its terms required half to be distributed outright at age 30 and the rest at 35. Nick turned 30 on September 14, 2023. He says the first payment - roughly $558,000 - never arrived. Recent filings put the total trust near $1.6 million. His lawyers argue California's slayer statute should not block money that became payable before the alleged killings because this is not an inheritance created by his parents' deaths. 

The trustee side has opposed immediate release while questions about the trust, Nick's capacity, and the criminal case remain unresolved. Court records also show former private defense lawyer Alan Jackson received fees from the trust in April, even though Nick says he has not received money for his own commissary account. Jackson has said his firm is willing to return if funding becomes available. 

The criminal stakes changed September 15 when District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced prosecutors will not seek the death penalty. Reiner still faces life without parole if convicted as charged, including the grand jury's lying-in-wait allegation. He has pleaded not guilty. His mental-health history may become part of his defense, but no formal insanity plea is publicly established. The trust dispute is scheduled for October 23.
