Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 7: Why Do 716 Messages Matter?

Ohio BCI analyst Samantha Reeb put the Caleb Flynn case on a digital timeline, including a surge of 716 communications beginning the afternoon before Ashley Flynn was killed.

Reeb testified that she assisted investigators with preserving data, reviewing records obtained through search warrants, and organizing that information into a timeline. Her work included analyzing more than 107,000 messages exchanged between Flynn and Alleigha Botner.

According to Reeb, an Instagram account using the false identity “Derrick Hammond” was created by Flynn’s phone and used to monitor and communicate with Botner.

Reeb also grouped messages according to their subject matter. She testified that 141 referenced Flynn wanting to kill Ashley, 95 referenced his hatred of Ashley, and 188 involved discussions about deleting digital information.

Communication between Flynn and Botner dropped dramatically during January, according to Reeb. They began communicating again February 14.

Reeb counted 266 communications from that point into February 15. Then, beginning around 4 p.m. February 15 and continuing into February 16, the number increased to 716.

Reeb testified that GroupMe was deleted from Flynn’s phone at roughly 1 a.m. February 16. Instagram was also deleted around that time.

Flynn denies killing his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he murdered Ashley and staged a burglary. His defense says an actual intruder was responsible.

The jury has heard what many of these messages allegedly said. Reeb’s testimony gives them the chronology, categories, and volume surrounding them.
