Trial Of Caleb Flynn Day 2: What Ryszek and Casto Found at Scene

Forensic testimony took center stage in the Caleb Flynn trial as crime scene technician Holly Ryszek and forensic pathologist Dr. Bryan Casto addressed different pieces of the evidence. Ryszek described testing and collection inside the Flynn home. Casto explained findings from Ashley Flynn's autopsy. 

Ryszek testified that swabs from the sink drain and shower drain in the master suite did not test positive for blood. She said suspected blood collected from light switches was blood. She also described collecting DNA swabs from numerous locations in the bedroom and master bathroom and from Caleb Flynn's truck. 

One of Ryszek's observations went directly to the disputed burglary account. She testified that the garage door appeared inconsistent with forced entry. Prosecutors allege the scene was staged to look like a home invasion. The defense says an intruder killed Ashley and argues investigators settled on Caleb too quickly. 

Casto testified that Ashley had two gunshot wounds to the head that were very close together. Toxicology showed Prozac in her system and an elevated level of melatonin. Casto said the melatonin result meant Ashley had taken melatonin at some point. 

The defense used cross-examination to establish limits in the autopsy findings. Casto said the two bullet tracks overlapped and that the firing range was indeterminate. That left jurors with a documented wound pattern, but no specific distance between the firearm and Ashley when the shots were fired. 

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Ryszek's testimony showed where investigators searched for blood and DNA and gave her assessment of the garage entry. Casto documented the wounds and toxicology while acknowledging that the autopsy could not determine firing range.
