Trial Of Caleb Flynn Day 3: DNA Scientists Found WHAT At The Scene?

DNA evidence took center stage in the Caleb Flynn trial as four BCI forensic scientists explained how multiple analysts worked through samples collected in the investigation into Ashley Flynn’s death. 

Nicole Augsback, Jennifer Akbar, Phillip Irion, and Andrea Weisenburger each described the laboratory process and how the DNA work was divided among the team. Weisenburger testified that she authored the final report and was responsible for the conclusions reached from that analysis. 

According to Weisenburger’s testimony, the DNA testing inside the home did not identify a contributor outside the people who lived there. The defense maintains Ashley was killed during a home invasion. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the scene to make it look that way. 

On cross-examination, however, Weisenburger acknowledged a limit that matters whenever DNA gets treated like a timestamp: it is not one. She testified there is no way to determine when DNA was deposited. 

She also discussed a mixed DNA sample from the truck console. Weisenburger said most of that mixture was Caleb Flynn’s DNA, while the source of the additional DNA could not be identified from her analysis. 

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to all charges in the death of Ashley Flynn.
